Finding Inspiration: India

I have become increasingly more interested in arts and crafts from around the world.  My friends and family will tell you I have very different tastes when it comes to things for my home.  I have always gravitated towards colours from yellows to oranges to pinks to reds so basically the same area of the colour wheel combined with black and white.  It's not deliberate, it is just what I'm drawn to.

This month I'm working on a quilt made from a sari one of my previous neighbour's gave me.  Saris are a great source of fabric if you are on a budget especially if you can find one second hand.  For this quilt I knew what I wanted to achieve but didn't know where to start so had to do a bit of research aka googling.  I found a blog that had a short tutorial.  I didn't follow it exactly but it did give me some idea on how to get started.

The sari I had was quite long so I cut off a piece to use later for cushions.  The leftover piece I folded in half right sides together and pinned a length of microfleece to the top.  Next I used the sewing machine to stitch around the edges but if I had to do it again I would probably opt to hand stitch it.  I then turned it right side out so the fleece was between the two layers of sari fabric.

Starting from the top I am using embroidery thread to run stitches along the width of the quilt.  If my sari had been heavily patterned I would have opted for plain white thread but because it is mostly plain I am using every colour I can find and so far I am loving it.  I figure if I can achieve at least twenty rows of stitches a day I should have it finished in a couple of weeks.

  1. It's the most stunning colour isn't it?! My MIL has travelled to India quite a few times and the fabrics she brings back are just divine. Can't wait to see your quilt when it's finished x
